Joining McGill will be pianist Anna Polonsky. Both artists should be familiar to Kalamazoo audiences, as they each have performed here in recent concerts to rave reviews.

About Anthony McGill

Clarinetist Anthony McGill is one of classical music’s most recognizable and brilliantly multifaceted figures. He is the New York Philharmonic’s first African-American principal player. He appears regularly as a soloist with top orchestras and chamber ensembles around North America.

McGill is a powerful voice against injustice, most recently posting a solo performance of “America the Beautiful” to Facebook. At the end of the video, he tucks his clarinet behind his back and sinks to his knees. In the accompanying statement, he challenges fellow musicians and Americans to shine a light on racism using the hashtag #TakeTwoKnees — a tribute to Colin Kaepernick’s kneeling protests of police violence.

McGill’s and Polonsky’s program celebrates the diversity of the Americas: Leonard Bernstein’s Clarinet Sonata, which synthesizes mid-20th century classical styles with jazz and Latin music; the music of pioneering African American composer Florence Price; and the folk-inspired music of Argentinian composer Carlos Guastavino.

Leonard Bernstein: Sonata for Clarinet and Piano
Florence Price: Adoration
