Musician's Notes
I spend a lot of time walking around the Stuart neighborhood listening to music or taking photos. When it rains on my walks, the gradual drips and drops from the sky create a beautiful series of rhythms that are always unique.
My piece “Water Protocols” explores those rhythms, as well as the feelings one might encounter when walking through this beautiful neighborhood when it rains. My two collaborators are vocalist Julia Moffa and trumpet player Yakiv Tvietinskyi. I often work with these two musicians, and their sounds have become an essential part of my composition. Also joining in on this piece is drummer Madison George and bassist John Hébert.
About
Michigan native Stratøs is a multiple award-winning saxophonist, composer, producer, and film photographer whose presence in the modern jazz scene is rapidly growing.
His improvisational style is rooted heavily in the subtle melodicism of the cool jazz tradition and extends to the bold, complex nature of the modern electronic jazz scene. His compositions explore a combination of elements between jazz and other styles such as hip-hop, metal, electronica and classical.
His recent works include The Archangel Suite, a four-movement collection written for electronic jazz ensemble and accompanied by live visual projections; “Obsidian Galaxy,” a collaboration project between the Western Michigan University Advanced Jazz Ensemble and electronic composer Dr. Christopher Biggs; and Planets, a full length album entirely produced by the saxophonist which features the likes of Alekos Syropoulos, 2019 JUNO award nominee Andrew Rathbun, John Hébert, and renowned saxophonist/composer/producer David Binney.
