“Safe Days”

Music by Laurie Jarski

Artist's Statement

Almost immediately, I was drawn to the “Safe Days” sign in the showcase. I felt a strong correlation between the uneasy anticipation of an unsafe day incident occurring with that of my current feeling of a lack of safety in the world today. Without thinking, I found myself creating and playing with the ‘coo coo’ motif in the mandolin voice along with shifting meters of timekeeping. The mandolin at times expresses the uneasy anticipation with brittle harmonies denoting danger and edgy sounds and rhythms, eluding to shards of glass or other uncomfortable incidents. The bass plays the role of soothing confidence and reassurance that it all will be alright and safe.
