We smelled the mint
on our bikes that day
before we knew where we were.
Runaway plants from the old farm
lined the bike trail, hot July sun
steaming the scent through our spokes.
We had argued about which direction to take,
wondered how lost we might be. Placed blame.
But when the aroma and the remnants of the
farm surrounded us, we paused. Sniffed.
Realized our place on the map. Across the field
the last home in the village of Mentha,
abandoned, encased in vines, and still,
and always, the smell of mint.
